A Lament for the United Church of Canada

A Lament for the United Church of Canada

Lament is about honesty, and if our United Church students are honest, there are things to lament about the church they will be serving.  (The following lament was written by a group of students as part of a session on the biblical tradition of lament.)

A Lament for the United Church of Canada

God of Power, Strength and Compassion
We mourn the loss of people in our churches
We grieve the loss of children and young families
We lament the harms cause in Your Image and Your Name.

We know that churches have met our needs before.
We long for health, vibrant, faith-filled ministries that experience the spirit of God and the “good news” in community.
We worry about our denomination crumbling from within, from divisions and internal injustice.
We want to hold accountable those who cling to their personal power and hypocrisy.

Give us strength, open-mindedness, patience and trust.
Make us channels of transformation.
We thank you for the passion and wisdom of like-minded people, as we become one in the body of Christ.
