What’s your spiritual practice?

As we were preparing for CCS’s online Spiritual Practice learning circle (Tuesdays and Thursdays, Jan 13 to Feb 19), we decided to ask people on Facebook about their spiritual practice. Do they have a habit, discipline, or routine that keeps them spiritually grounded? How do they know if/when it’s working? (And what does “working” even mean when it comes to spiritual practice?)

Gwen McAllister said she want to take up walking around her neighbourhood as a spiritual practice, to increase her sense of connection (and safety) and to see daily the face of God in both the suffering and the thriving in her neighbourhood.

Jenni Krall’s spiritual practices shift depending on what’s happening in her life, and include things like walking a labyrinth, making art, going for walks, gardening, taking a bath, sky-watching, writing poetry, dance or yoga, and photography. Jenni calls these “inner” spiritual practices. She also engages in “outer” sacred practices like activism, resistance, and challenging systems and powers. The purpose of spiritual practice is simply to keep showing up with openness, presence, and trust, allowing the path to reveal itself as you walk it.

What’s your spiritual practice? Let us know in the comments.

  1. I have two on-line Daily Reflections (Norval United and United Church of Christ) that I read each morning before getting up. These focus and comfort (or challenge me) and get me connected with the Holy One as the day starts.
At night I do a prayer of thanks for whatever happened during it and the people who helped me survive it.
When it works, I feel calmer and connect to the “beyond” of my being.
