A group of diaconal students

They came from B.C. and Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia. From October 15 to 21, students gathered in Winnipeg for a social justice learning circle exploring Power & Privilege. They brought their passion for justice, their diaconal commitment to doing ministry from the margins, and their willingness to wrestle with their own privileges in an inequitable society.

Our chaplain for the circle was Irene Rainey. As well as being a calming and supportive presence and a listening ear for students who needed to talk, she also drew on her years of diaconal experience in social ministry to lift up the prophetic role of the diaconate.

A book study of Robin DiAngelo’s Nice Racism invited students to wrestle with the difference between intentions and impact, and a tour of some Winnipeg landmarks spurred critical reflection on the legacy of the Social Gospel. Throughout the week students considered how to make empowerment, solidarity, and social change an integrated part of their ministry.
