Walking for Justice

Recent CCS graduate and soon-to-be commissioned Diaconal Minister, Susan Toller, offered the land acknowledgement for the Gaza Ceasefire Pilgrimage at Parliament Hill in Ottawa on May 22, 2024. “Who would have thought I’d be speaking on Parliament Hill as an ‘almost Reverend’?” commented Sue.

Sue delivered the land acknowledgement and her ministry colleague Rev Dr Teresa Burnett-Cole offered a prayer. There were hundreds of people representing various faith traditions as well as individual justice-seekers. Sue was excited to meet the UCC Moderator Carmen Lansdowne, who was attending.

Participants were asked to wear white for the pilgrimage. Sue took the opportunity to wear her CCS t-shirt, which says “Reflect, Act, Be Transformed” on the front, and “I am a walking advertisement for the Centre for Christian Studies” on the back. People took the opportunity to ask her about CCS during the 14 km pilgrimage.

“Thanks to all of you for all the wonderful ministry training and preparation you gave me.” Sue says. “I feel like you prepared me for this moment. I wasn’t even nervous!”

Other members of the wider CCS community were also in attendance, and Sue enjoyed connecting with her diaconal colleagues.
