SUMMARY:Nice Racism?
DESCRIPTION:CCS joins again in celebrating Black History Month. But we cannot celebrate without also lamenting that in their amazing journey of courage\, legacy\, and contribution\, oppression and microaggressions are still happening today. With the celebration\, we join in naming the systemic and mostly inadvertent ways we participate\, despite our good intentions. \nYou are invited to join us on February 20 (5pm Central\, 6pm Eastern\, 4pm Mountain\, 3pm Pacific\, 7pm Atlantic) for an online conversation based on Robin DiAngelo’s book Nice Racism: How Progressive White People Perpetuate Racial Harm (Beacon Press\, 2021). This is a thought-provoking and challenging book that CCS students wrestled with as part of the recent Power & Privilege learning circle We will introduce some of the key concepts and invite students to share some of their reflections and learnings\, before engaging participants in conversation about their experiences with “nice racism”. \nLamentation without self-examination and systemic examination\, or reflection without a commitment to become allies in addressing and interrupting racism\, will not lead to transformation. We will encourage participants to think about how to continue with mutual commitment and deep analysis. \nThis online event is free. Please register to receive a link.

SUMMARY:Diaconal Open House for DLMs
DESCRIPTION:As you may know\, Designated Lay Ministers (DLM) in the United Church who have served 5 years are being asked to discern their call to ordered ministry – ordained or diaconal. To assist DLMs with their discernment\, the Centre for Christian Studies is hosting an online open house/conversation on Diaconal Ministry and diaconal calling. \nMonday\, February 12 (4pm Pacific\, 5pm Mountain\, 6pm Central\, 7pm Easter\, 8pm Atlantic). \nThis hour and a half session is hosted by CCS (one of the UCC theological schools specializing in diaconal formation) with involvement from DUCC (Diakonia of the United Church of Canada). It will include an introduction to “diaconal call”\, some myths and misconceptions about Diaconal Ministry\, some information about diaconal community (in the United Church\, in Canada\, and globally)\, and some suggestions of continuing education to deepen one’s understanding and connection to diaconal perspectives. There will be time for questions from DLMs and time for small group conversations with diaconal folks. (This session probably shouldn’t replace sitting down for an extended conversation with a Diaconal Minister about their understanding of diaconal identity\, but it will be a good start to making connections.) \nThis event is free. Click HERE to register.

SUMMARY:CCS Friday - Youth and Climate Justice
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Friday\, Dec 8 (noon Manitoba time\, 11 in Alberta\, 1 in Ontario\, etc.) for an online discussion of youth and climate justice. Our special guest will be Amy Crawford\, team leader for Faith Formation and Mission with the General Council of the United Church of Canada\, who coordinated last summers Climate Motivator’s program for UCC youth. \nThis summer\, 15 youth from across the church participated in the United Church of Canada’s first ever Climate Motivators program. Each student was sponsored by\, and in partnership with\, a local community of faith where they worked together on local climate justice or environmental needs. The motivators connected online and in-person to learn how to be leaders\, worship\, be in nature\, act for change\, and influence church policy\, including time spent with the UCC Moderator\, Carmen Lansdowne. \nAmy Crawford has just returned from a short sabbatical where she was reviewing and evaluating what happened to the youth and the people they interacted with.  She will share some of her insights and might even bring a Climate Motivator to share leadership! \nCCS Fridays are free. Please register to receive a zoom link. \nCCS Fridays: \nOnline conversations to help us respond faithfully to emerging issues in local contexts.  These workshops are open to anyone who might be interested. Each session will be on a Friday from 12:00 to 1:00 CT and in the form of a Zoom workshop.  There will be a presentation that will be recorded for future viewing\, plus opportunities to engage with the ideas in small groups.

DESCRIPTION:Do you ever feel isolated in your ministry or leadership? Well\, ironically\, you are not alone!  Join in on Friday\, November 10\, 2023 at noon Central Time for an online discussion of coping strategies for feelings of loneliness and isolation. \nOur special guest will be Tracy Fairfield (CCS Alumnus 2008) as she shares some learnings and insights\, through engaging talks and activities\, based on her experience at a clergy wellness retreat put on by BC LeaderShift\, at Naramata Centre. \nLoneliness and isolation are definitely very different things\, but regardless which you feel\, as a layperson\, clergy\, theology student\, deacon or deaconess around the world\, your vocation impacts your mental health and well-being. SUMMARY:CCS Friday - Diakonia During Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Friday\, October 27\, 2023 at noon (Winnipeg time) for an online discussion of climate change and how to respond as faith-filled individuals and as ministers. This past summer has delivered unprecedented and extreme weather phenomena to many parts of the Canada and around the world. What are the implications of climate change to your community and context? Who are we in within the community of creation\, and what is our responsibility to all life on Earth? What does climate change mean for the collective ministry of diakonia? \nOur special guests will be Eric Tusz-King and Katrina Martich. Eric is a “mostly-retired” Diaconal Minister in the United Church\, with experience in housing and energy issues\, who has served on the UCC’s Climate Advisory Committee and is still on the Climate Advisory Committee for the town of Tantramar\, NB\, where he currently lives. Katrina is a deaconess and environmental engineer who is a member of the Lutheran Diaconal Association. She is a writer\, speaker\, preacher\, teacher\, and advocate for a better way of living together within creation. She recently moved to Spokane\, Washington. \nCCS Fridays events are free. Please register to receive a link. \nCCS Fridays:\nOnline conversations to help us all to respond faithfully to emerging issues in local contexts.  These workshops are open to anyone who might be interested. Each session will be on a Friday from 12:00 to 1:00 (Winnipeg time) and in the form of a Zoom workshop.  There will be a presentation that will be recorded for future viewing\, plus opportunities to engage with the ideas in small groups.

SUMMARY:Who Is Asian? An Online Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Asian Heritage Month is a time to celebrate Asian communities. Recently CCS Principal Alan Lai was in conversation with friends from diverse cultural heritages rooted in a geographical area called Asia\, and they wondered\, “Who is Asian? Why are we called Asian? Do we see ourselves as Asians? Who gave us this nomenclature?”\n\nThis free online event invites several members from the United Church of Canada community to reflect on the question: “Are you Asian?” Participants will hear how each panelist addresses this question and have an opportunity to engage with them.\n\nCome and join this conversation whether you are Asian or not. This discussion may shed lights on the lingering power of colonization and implications for intercultural ministry.\n\n\nPanelists:\nRev. Dr. Alan Lai\, Principal\, Centre for Christian Studies\nDr. Emo Yango\, Church in Mission Unit\, General Church Office\, United Church of Canada\nSandy Hwang\, Seminarian\, Vancouver School of Theology\nHyeRim Park\, Diaconal Ministry student\, Centre for Christian Studies.\n\nWhen: Wednesday\, May 17th\nTime: 6 pm – 7:30 pm CT\nPlace: Zoom\, Click [HERE] to register for a link \nFee: None

SUMMARY:CCS Friday - Addiction and Faith
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Friday\, March 31\, 2023 at noon (Winnipeg time) for an online discussion of addiction ministry. Our special guest will be Ed Treat from the Centre of Addiction and Faith. Ed believes churches are poised to make a dent in the opioid crisis because they have locations in tiny rural communities that may not have other local supports like a doctor or social worker available in town.  He’ll help us explore the scope for developing an addiction ministry team that takes actions such as providing resources on addiction in libraries\, getting narcan training\, and training people to support those living with or recovering from addiction.  We’ll have a chance to explore addiction and recovery in a Biblical text.   \nThe Centre of Addiction and Faith is committed to helping ministers and leaders learn how faith communities can better understand addiction\, and to better address the spiritual needs of those afflicted. There are so many who need spiritual care\, and faith communities can do so much more to help.
