SUMMARY:September CCS Friday - Art as Spiritual Practice
DESCRIPTION:As bearers of God’s image\, we are each invited to participate in God’s creation. How does creative practice connect to your sense of vocation? Rev. Dawn practices contemplative photography and painting from her home in Halifax\, NS. She is always listening for the lessons that artists have to teach us as humans and leaders. She is concerned with clergy well-being\, particularly facing the challenges of 21st century churches. \nCCS Fridays are free. Please register to receive a zoom link. \nCCS Fridays: Online conversations to help us all to respond faithfully to emerging issues in local contexts.  These workshops are open to anyone who might be interested. SUMMARY:March CCS Friday - The Ecology of Faith Formation
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Friday\, March 15 (noon Central\, 1pm Eastern\, 11am Mountain\, 10am Pacific\, 2pm Atlantic) for an online conversation about the eco-system of faith formation in congregations. Our special guest will be UCC Growth Animator Greg Smith-Young. \nWithin creation\, ecosystems form as different and diverse creatures (living and non-living) interact together. Each part plays a vital role in making the whole. Ecosystems are about interdependence and integration. What can happen when we bring an “ecosystem” way of thinking into the faith formation work of congregations? Join us as we imagine the possibilities. \nGreg Smith-Young (he/him) is a Growth Animator with the United Church of Canada. He serves alongside existing and newly-forming communities of faith in southwest Ontario\, helping them to share in what Jesus is already doing in their places: inviting\, welcoming\, engaging\, forming disciples\, and sending to share in God’s Presence. \nCCS Fridays are free. Please register to receive a zoom link. \nCCS Fridays: Online conversations to help us all to respond faithfully to emerging issues in local contexts.  These workshops are open to anyone who might be interested. Each session will be on a Friday from 12:00 to 1:00 CT and in the form of a Zoom workshop.  There will be a presentation that will be recorded for future viewing\, plus opportunities to engage with the ideas in small groups.

Engaging in this dialogue invites participants to explore the complex dynamics of identity\, community\, and spirituality. This Presentation is not only a tribute to the profound contributions of Black Canadians but also a call to action—urging us to commit to the principles of equity\, empathy\, and solidarity. \nThis event is free. SUMMARY:February CCS Friday - Harmonious Space
DESCRIPTION:You’ve heard about creating “safe space.” Join us for an online conversation about creating “harmonious space” rather than “safe space” and how harmonious space is the condition in which diversity and inclusion truly grow.  Guided by author bell hooks\, who said\, “ Learning takes place in harmonious space” and “Community that allows for risk\, the risk of knowing someone outside your own boundaries is love.”  We will consider harmony and risk a opposed to “safety” as the best environment suitable for diversity. \nOur special guest will be Deaconess Adrainne Gray.  Adrainne was consecrated a Lutheran Diaconal Association (LDA) deaconess and ordained an Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) deacon in 2017.  She is currently the Director for Recruitment for the LDA with a focus on Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion and works remotely from her home in Atlanta\, GA. \nCCS Fridays are free. SUMMARY:Nice Racism?
DESCRIPTION:CCS joins again in celebrating Black History Month. But we cannot celebrate without also lamenting that in their amazing journey of courage\, legacy\, and contribution\, oppression and microaggressions are still happening today. With the celebration\, we join in naming the systemic and mostly inadvertent ways we participate\, despite our good intentions. \nYou are invited to join us on February 20 (5pm Central\, 6pm Eastern\, 4pm Mountain\, 3pm Pacific\, 7pm Atlantic) for an online conversation based on Robin DiAngelo’s book Nice Racism: How Progressive White People Perpetuate Racial Harm (Beacon Press\, 2021). This is a thought-provoking and challenging book that CCS students wrestled with as part of the recent Power & Privilege learning circle We will introduce some of the key concepts and invite students to share some of their reflections and learnings\, before engaging participants in conversation about their experiences with “nice racism”. \nLamentation without self-examination and systemic examination\, or reflection without a commitment to become allies in addressing and interrupting racism\, will not lead to transformation. We will encourage participants to think about how to continue with mutual commitment and deep analysis. \nThis online event is free. Please register to receive a link.

SUMMARY:Diaconal Open House for DLMs
DESCRIPTION:As you may know\, Designated Lay Ministers (DLM) in the United Church who have served 5 years are being asked to discern their call to ordered ministry – ordained or diaconal. To assist DLMs with their discernment\, the Centre for Christian Studies is hosting an online open house/conversation on Diaconal Ministry and diaconal calling. \nMonday\, February 12 (4pm Pacific\, 5pm Mountain\, 6pm Central\, 7pm Easter\, 8pm Atlantic). \nThis hour and a half session is hosted by CCS (one of the UCC theological schools specializing in diaconal formation) with involvement from DUCC (Diakonia of the United Church of Canada). It will include an introduction to “diaconal call”\, some myths and misconceptions about Diaconal Ministry\, some information about diaconal community (in the United Church\, in Canada\, and globally)\, and some suggestions of continuing education to deepen one’s understanding and connection to diaconal perspectives. There will be time for questions from DLMs and time for small group conversations with diaconal folks. (This session probably shouldn’t replace sitting down for an extended conversation with a Diaconal Minister about their understanding of diaconal identity\, but it will be a good start to making connections.) \nThis event is free. SUMMARY:CCS Friday - Youth and Climate Justice
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Friday\, Dec 8 (noon Manitoba time\, 11 in Alberta\, 1 in Ontario\, etc.) for an online discussion of youth and climate justice. Our special guest will be Amy Crawford\, team leader for Faith Formation and Mission with the General Council of the United Church of Canada\, who coordinated last summers Climate Motivator’s program for UCC youth. \nThis summer\, 15 youth from across the church participated in the United Church of Canada’s first ever Climate Motivators program. Each student was sponsored by\, and in partnership with\, a local community of faith where they worked together on local climate justice or environmental needs. The motivators connected online and in-person to learn how to be leaders\, worship\, be in nature\, act for change\, and influence church policy\, including time spent with the UCC Moderator\, Carmen Lansdowne. \nAmy Crawford has just returned from a short sabbatical where she was reviewing and evaluating what happened to the youth and the people they interacted with.  She will share some of her insights and might even bring a Climate Motivator to share leadership! \nCCS Fridays are free. SUMMARY:CCS Friday - Diakonia During Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Friday\, October 27\, 2023 at noon (Winnipeg time) for an online discussion of climate change and how to respond as faith-filled individuals and as ministers. This past summer has delivered unprecedented and extreme weather phenomena to many parts of the Canada and around the world. What are the implications of climate change to your community and context? Who are we in within the community of creation\, and what is our responsibility to all life on Earth? What does climate change mean for the collective ministry of diakonia? \nOur special guests will be Eric Tusz-King and Katrina Martich. Eric is a “mostly-retired” Diaconal Minister in the United Church\, with experience in housing and energy issues\, who has served on the UCC’s Climate Advisory Committee and is still on the Climate Advisory Committee for the town of Tantramar\, NB\, where he currently lives. Katrina is a deaconess and environmental engineer who is a member of the Lutheran Diaconal Association. She is a writer\, speaker\, preacher\, teacher\, and advocate for a better way of living together within creation. She recently moved to Spokane\, Washington. \nCCS Fridays events are free. Please register to receive a link. \nCCS Fridays:\nOnline conversations to help us all to respond faithfully to emerging issues in local contexts.  These workshops are open to anyone who might be interested.
