Announcing the 2020 Companion of the Centre – Anne Manikel

The Companion of the Centre is awarded annually to acknowledge someone who has made a significant contribution to the work of CCS or whose life and work epitomizes the ideals of CCS. We are pleased to announce that the 2020 Companion of the Centre recipient will be Anne Manikel, Diaconal Minister with the United Church of Canada.

Growing up in Winnipeg, and having farmed with her partner Randy in rural Manitoba, Anne now lives on Vancouver Island.  She is a graduate of the Western Field Based Program for Diaconal Ministry and served the church with various congregations in Manitoba, as well as in chaplaincy at The University of Manitoba.  After moving to the Island, she received her Interim Ministry training and served several congregations in and around Nanaimo, B.C.  In her retirement she continues to be involved in faith-based justice projects with her home church, Brechin United in Nanaimo.

Anne’s ministry is lived out in various projects through the Mission and Outreach Team which she chaired for many years. After some initial research on the needs of the community a number of areas became a focus and passion for this team: enabling the congregation in becoming an Affirming congregation, connecting with First Nations in the area to explore recommendations of the Truth & Reconciliation Commission, support for and work with the Loaves & Fishes Food Bank, reaching out globally through LGBTQ2Q refugee sponsorships, as well as many educational events on justice related topics for the congregation and community.

It was said in the nomination that Anne never does ministry alone. She has a leadership style that is collaborative, inspirational, strong and courageous, compassionate, encouraging and sensitive to those with whom she works and brings joy to it all.

Anne is a deep person of faith, appreciating and valuing the traditions of the church, and is committed to lifelong learning in ways that engage theological questions and practices of faith.  She is truly dedicated to diaconal ministry and the values of CCS.

Anne will be presented with the Companion of the Centre award at CCS’s Annual Service of Celebration on April 26, 2020.
