VIDEO – May Second Friday – Rob & Keiko Witmer on Solidarity with the Ainu

Rob and Keiko Wittmer were our Second Fridays guests in May. They spoke to us about their work with the Dohoku Centre in Japan and about the Ainu people, the indigenous people of northern Japan.

witmerRob and Keiko Witmer have been United Church overseas personnel since 1969, working in northern Japan.  They have been associated with a grouping of 10 tiny churches in northern Hokkaido through the the Dohoku Centre,  a rural church centre which carries out programs related to issues of food, agriculture, and rural society.  These churches are also in relationship with the Ainu Peoples Resource Centre which is working in various ways to be in solidarity with the Ainu, the aboriginal people of northern Japan.

We were fortunate enough to these two wonderful Spirit-driven people as our worship co-leaders on May 3rd, and as our gracious guests at our place afterward. There was an instant connection between us. It was a treat on many levels.
